Greenpeace USA joins the PPC
We are very very pleased to welcome Greenpeace USA as the first organization to join the Plastic Pollution Coalition in 2010.
Greenpeace USA has over a quarter million members and a long history of activism in areas like Global Warming, Forests, Genetic Engineering, Nuclear, Toxics, and Oceans. The latter two are particularly connected with plastic pollution, as the plastification of our own blood streams echoes the mounting presence of plastics in the world’s oceans.
In 2006, the Greenpeace ship Esperanza, as part of the Defending Our Oceans expedition, sailed through several plastic pollution ‘ground
zeroes’ like the North Pacific Gyre, Midway Atoll and Manila Bay. As a result, Greenpeace released a 44-page study on plastic pollution in the oceans.
The Plastic Pollution Coalition seeks to provide a space for collaboration and discussion on the emerging problem of plastic pollution. We believe that emblematic organizations like Greenpeace have an very important role to play in this dialogue, and look forward to working together to continue to expose and remediate the tragic consequences of plastic pollution worldwide.
