Glass Necklaces: Our Talismans Against Plastics
In October 2009, Dianna Cohen, cofounder of Plastic Pollution Coalition, commissioned glass artist Liz Marx to create a talisman to remind us to choose wise and healthy alternatives.
Also a reminder to REFUSE single-use and disposable plastics daily. The necklaces Liz created are the result of melting sections of glass bottle necks in a kiln. All are different, and have very organic, soft and compelling shapes. As Liz Marx explains “These necklaces are an example of re-use and a metaphor for how just a little bit of human interaction and creativity and vision can alter everything and / or anything … and can become a beautiful artistic expression … the glass was dug out of the dumpster and was reworked and redesigned to become a talisman.”
Since then, many of our notable supporters and advisors have been spotted wearing our necklaces, and have referred many friends to our web store to buy them. More notably, during TED’s Mission Blue Voyage to Galapagos in April 2010, most of the attendees and speakers were photographed sporting them. In the photo below you can see filmmaker Mike deGruy, artist Dianna Cohen, oceanographer John Delaney, and the legendary Sylvia Earle, all wearing their glass talismans.
You can show your support for our cause by getting your own signature Plastic Pollution Coalition necklace: find it at our online store.
