Educating About Plastic Pollution at the Greek Theatre
By Felicia Vargo-Johnson
Plastic Pollution Coalition was invited to table at a recent Jackson Browne Concert at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Together the Plastic Pollution Coalition, the Algalita Marine Research Foundation, Friends of the LA River, and the Ballona Institute were able to engage with concert goers and discuss today’s crisis in our oceans and rivers. Many came to speak with us, voicing concern over the photos on display showing plastic pollution poisoning coastlines and collecting in all of our water resources.
This was a meaningful experience for all of us because we are so passionate about spreading awareness to the public and helping them to understand how a problem like this occurs. It is important to understand that we are not powerless in this situation –that our decisions matter and make a difference, and not just locally, but globally. Plastic travels, and one water bottle from Los Angeles can quickly end up on a beachfront in Hawaii, or even China! All waterways connect, and with increased awareness, we can make better choices about the products we buy, their lifespan, and the ecological impacts that they have.
This project was made possible by The Guacamole Fund.
