Surfing legends Chris and Keith Malloy have spent years traveling around the world looking for the best undiscovered surfing spots. From Antarctica to Iceland, and from Galapagos to New Caledonia, no matter how remote the place was, plastic was already there.

The Malloys have spent years exploring uncharted waters around the Irish coast to find empty, world-class waves. They featured in the Irish section of the 2003 blockbuster surf film Step Into Liquid and then returned to Irish waters to film Waveriders.

Directed by Stephen Leslie, this video was originally recorded for BBC’s Comedy Shuffle.  We’d like to thank our friend Sara Bayles, author of the popular blog The Daily Ocean for giving us the heads up.

The study, published Oct. 6, (download full report PDF) suggests that if a woman is exposed to plastics that leach BPA during her pregnancy,  the baby’s nervous system might be adversely affected.  Consequences include aggressive behavior and hyperactivity.

This is the first study ever to examine if there is a link between prenatal BPA exposure and these neurological problems in children.  Until now all studies had been performed on animals, not on humans, even though this concern has been expressed by scientists for years.

Other public health disasters, such as obesity, diabetes, breast cancer and infertility are also linked to bisphenol A (BPA) exposure.

Governments have a responsibility to intervene immediately and protect the public from exposure to BPA and other toxic chemicals leached by plastics, especially when scientific investigation has already established a more than plausible risk to human health. In some legal systems, as in the law of the European Union, the precautionary principle is a general and compulsory principle of the law.  Unfortunately, this is not the case in the US.

In the face of governmental apathy, and collusion with the plastic industry lobbyists, time has come for us citizens to raise awareness and start a social movement to demand legislation to ban BPA.

Watch this video by Dr. Frederick vom Saal, Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Missouri and an expert in the study of the effects of BPA.

Jackson Browne, a supporter of the Plastic Pollution Coalition, says loud and clear what he thinks of bottled water, and suggests a form of protest to be carried out at hotels: to hang around the necks of  the bottles of water for sale in hotel rooms paper tags that say “refused from a member of a worldwide coalition of people to protect the planet”.

An excellent idea based on the first and most important “R” of the 4 R’s of our SUPER pledge to reduce single use plastics: REFUSE. A protest that could be extended to events, conferences and other venues where little bottles of water are offered ‘for our convenience’ -only that, as Jackson Browne says, more and more of us are starting to see bottled water as a real inconvenience.  Go Jackson!
